Instagram rolled out major updates to its iOS and Android apps Tuesday, bringing several new editing tools.

Until now, the photo-sharing app has relied primarily on its preloaded filters to let users to change the look of their photos, along with a few other adjustments like tilt-shift. This changes dramatically with the latest version of Instagram, which includes 10 new standalone editing tools that allow you to make adjustments completely independent from filters.

Users can now adjust filters to vary how strong its effects are. A slider controls the intensity of each filter’s effect.

Instagram now allows you to adjust filter strength and make adjustments separately from filters.

Instagram has also moved the border tool to this section of the app. Borders, which look slightly different with each filter, can be applied by tapping the border tool after tapping on the filter a second time.

Instagram seems to be positioning itself as a more comprehensive image-editing platform with its new tools. For the first time, users can edit images on multiple levels without touching a filter.

Tap the wrench icon to bring up the editing menu that displays the new effects. Once you select one, you can control the intensity of with a slider. If you aren’t sure about your changes, just hold down the image at any time to see a preview of the original photo.

Previously, the only way you could change the levels of an image was with the Lux tool, which adjusted a photo’s saturation. Now you can fine-tune the lighting levels of a photo with four different tools — brightness, contrast, highlights and shadows— each of which can be dialed up or down for optimal effects.

Instagram color adjustments

Adjust a photo’s colors with the warm and saturation tools.

Color tones can also be controlled with the warmth and saturation tools. Adjusting the warmth will shift the photo’s color to cooler blue tones or warmer orange tones. Saturation lets you control the intensity of the colors of each image — dial up the intensity to make reds more red and yellows more yellow.

Vignette provides an alternative to the tilt-shift controls already built into the app by creating a dark border around the outside of an image to emphasize the center of the frame. While the sharpen tool subtly increases the clarity of an image by adding more definition to the entire photo.

Cropping and straightening has also been combined into one tool and moved to this section of the app, under the adjust menu.

While many of these editing tools will be familiar to those used to more robust photo editing apps like Camera+ or iPhoto, the features are a pretty significant shift for Instagram, which up to now has focused more on filters than offering advanced editing controls. The company says it will be adding even more editing fetaures to the app in the coming months so users can expect to gain an even higher level of control of their photos in future updates.
