Justin.tv, one of the web’s most popular video-streaming sites, announced this week that it will no longer offer video archiving, and will delete existing archives in June.

The company explained its change in policy, which will take effect June 8, on its website.

“Over the last few months, our staff has been reviewing data surrounding our archive and VOD (Video on Demand) system,” Justin.tv said in a statement. “We found that more than half of our VODs are unwatched (with 0 or 1 total views), while the vast majority are rarely watched (with 10 or less views).”

“So, taking into consideration the above findings and countless discussions, we have concluded to remove all archiving after June 8, 2014,” the post continued.

The move, which will wipe out years of archived video content documenting the site’s rise to prominence, is particularly noteworthy given recent rumors surrounding Twitch.tv, its spin-off video-game streaming site.

According to reports earlier this month, YouTube was in talks to acquire Twitch.tv for $1 billion, but a deal has yet to materialize. Both companies declined to comment on the rumors.

Figures from audience-measurement company Quantcast claim that Justin.tv brings in nearly 5 million unique visitors per month, compared to Twitch.tv’s nearly 38 million; these numbers suggest Justin.tv’s future is in video-game streams, rather than personal-video uploads. Supporting this notion is the fact that the company officially changed its name to Twitch Interactive, Inc. in February.

A Wall Street Journal report from February listed Twitch as the number-four Internet-traffic producer, just behind Netflix, Google and Apple, respectively.

The abrupt sunsetting of Justin.tv’s archiving feature, as well as the removal of its nearly seven years of video history, is a clear indication that the company is focusing its resources primarily on Twitch, leaving the fate of Justin.tv uncertain.

Justin.tv was originally spearheaded by co-founder Justin Kan, who live-streamed his life via the site for months. Over the years, users have transformed the site from a place to broadcast their personal lives to a hub for amateur newscasts and even illegal streams of mainstream television shows and movies.

But despite the often shaky quality and/or legal status of its broadcasts, an active community of commenters still drives activity on Justin.tv.

“We understand that archiving can be a very essential element for our broadcasters,” the Justin.tv statement reads. “However, as a live video website, we want to put our focus on our live video delivery system, as this has received the most usage.”
