Whenever Shay-Lean Woodley’s name comes up in conversation (and believe me, it is not often) and someone asks “Who???” I usually tell them to picture Jennifer Lawrence with an at-home haircut and a pair of toe shoes trading a pouch of healing stones for a bundle of fresh kale at a vegan co-op. However, Shay-Lean explains to New York Magazine that she’s getting tired of the comparisons by telling the story of a Tonight Show interview with Jimmy Fallon that was cut short after she got booed by the audience for throwing shade at America’s Girlfriend:

Fallon, who can border on golly-gee cheerleading during his interviews, said, “How do you feel about being compared to Jennifer Lawrence?” Woodley paused. “Well, comparisons always lead to despair.” There was sudden silence, and then the audience, which was shocked and angry, began to boo. Fallon said something like “Whoa,” and Woodley held her ground. “As women, we are constantly told that we need to compare ourselves to a girl in school, to our co-­workers, to the images in a magazine,” she told me later.

“I admire Jennifer Lawrence, but she’s everyone’s favorite person to compare me to. Is it because we both have short hair and a vagina? I see us as separate individuals.”

This bitch has clearly never worked in an office, where every other day someone will tell you you remind them of their cousin or their neighbour or their favorite barista at Starbucks, and you want to hiss “Bitch, like I give a fuck about your cousin??” because honestly, you don’t care, but instead you smile and make that hackey “I hope that’s not a bad thing!” joke and walk away. Shay-Lean needs to realize the comparison to J-Law is a compliment and she should take it. Hell, the fact that Shay-Lean is being compared to anything other than a bundle of patchouli-scented dried sage should be reason for her to celebrate.
