Actor LeVar Burton wants to bring his upcoming Reading Rainbow project to a host of new platforms, including gaming consoles like Xbox and PlayStation systems. For that to happen, though, funding for the Star Trek actor’s newly launched Kickstarter campaign needs to reach $5 million.

Right now, the campaign stands at $2.8 million from more than 64,000 backers. “Let’s do this, ya’ll. I’ll see you later. But you don’t have to take my word for it,” Burton said in a Kickstarter video update today. The campaign ends on Wednesday, July 2.

Burton’s new Reading Rainbow project was originally announced as a web application only, but after considering comments and suggestions, it was decided that to be “accessible to more kids and families,” the initiative would also need to expand to new platforms.

In addition to the unspecified Xbox and PlayStation consoles, if the $5 million stretch goal is met, the new Reading Rainbow program will be released for mobile devices, as well as over-the-top boxes like AppleTV, Roku, and Kindle Fire TV.

Burton’s overall ambition for his new Reading Rainbow initiative is to bring the program to “every child, everywhere.” The service will include an “unlimited library” of books and video field trips for “today’s digitally connected kids.” He’s calling on people who grew up with Reading Rainbow to help fund the new Kickstarter to support the children of the next generation.

Reading Rainbow went off the air in 2009. It originally aired on PBS and Burton was its host and producer.

PlayStation Plus members get 20-hour Battlefield 4 PS3 trial tomorrow - Webmaster News

In addition to the already-announced allotment of free games PlayStation Plus members have gotten this month, an extra freebie is coming tomorrow for PlayStation 3 owners in the form of a substantial free trial of Battlefield 4.

Game trials are nothing new to Plus, but whereas they typically allow Plus subscribers to try out a game for only an hour, this one will entitle them to play Battlefield 4 for 20 hours. You’ll only get access to content from the base game–which is, it should be noted, a substantial amount–but that unfortunately means you’ll still have to pay if you’re interested in trying out content from any of the three expansion packs released so far.

Since being released last October, Battlefield 4 has suffered from numerous technical problems. Future development was actually placed on hold at one point as publisher EA and developer DICE attempted to resolve these issues, many of which have been fixed as patches were rolled out. Things are still far from perfect, however, and DICE recently launched a new “Community Test Environment” on PC that it’s using to test changes and improvements.

Should the trial not be of interest to you, it’s luckily not the only thing Plus members get tomorrow, as Limbo for PlayStation Vita will be added to the Instant Game Collection. GameSpot’s review of the Vita version notes that it’s still the same great game released on consoles and PC, but lacks some of those versions’ visual fidelity.

PlayStation coming to China - Webmaster News

Sony has partnered with Shanghai Oriental Pearl Group Co Ltd to begin bringing in the PlayStation consoles in China, following the country’s lift of a 14-year ban on the sale of consoles.

According to BusinessWeek, Sony has agreed to form two ventures with Shanghai Oriental Pearl Group to begin making and selling PlayStation consoles. Sony will own a 70 percent stake in one venture and 49 percent in the other.

Sony did not reveal what timeframe consoles are expected to hit the Chinese market. It was not confirmed whether the PlayStation 4 or a specially designed console would be sold.

The announcement follows on from news last month of Microsoft’s plans to release the Xbox One in China this September. Statistics released at the Games Marketing Summit last month revealed that China holds a large potential market, with the number of gamers in the country surpassing the total population of the United States.

China originally implemented the ban of consoles in 2000 over concerns that video games could negatively impact the physical and mental development of children. Following the lift of the ban, a list of censorship rules for console games was published, disallowing games that promoted violence or drug use.
