Photograph by Royce Hutain (dopplerizer on reddit) | Facebook

Father and redditor dopplerizer captured this smile-inducing scene of his daughter at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, California.

The picture, which was taken on his iPhone, was submitted to reddit on Sunday where it reached the top spot on the front page and has already been viewed over a million times (yes, reddit is gigantic). Other users quickly contributed their edits, creating movie posters, funny photoshops and of course animated gifs.

In this amazing capture, we see Japan’s iconic Mount Fuji from space. The photo was taken by an astronaut onboard the International Space Station on 27 May 2010 using a Kodak DCS460 Electronic Still Camera with a 800 mm lens.

Mount Fuji, located on Honshu Island, is the highest mountain in Japan at 3,776.24m (12,389 ft). An active stratovolcano that last erupted in 1707–08, Mount Fuji lies about 100 kilometres (60 mi) south-west of Tokyo and can be seen from there on a clear day. Mount Fuji’s exceptionally symmetrical cone is snow-capped several months a year.

KVAL-TV Reporter/Fill-In Anchor Chris Liedle took this amazing photo of a storm cloud and rainbow last week in Eugene, Oregon. Chris said he took the shot whilst hiking Spencer Butte, a prominent landmark in Lane County, Oregon, on the southern edge of Eugene, with an elevation of 2,058 feet (627 m).

Spencer Butte is accessible from Spencer Butte Park and has several hiking trails to the summit. The tree cover on the butte is predominantly Douglas-fir, however the butte is treeless at its summit. The butte is the tallest point visible when looking south from downtown Eugene.

The photo itself was tweeted in response to another ‘rainbow storm cloud’ that was spotted by Victor Gensini in Norfolk, Colorado.

During a visit to the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro; Lee Thompson, founder of the Flash Pack travel company, was granted permission by the Brazilian tourist board to scale to the top of the statue for the ultimate selfie. The statue was under repair after a lightning storm and it took Thompson 25 minutes to climb to the top (through a set of narrow steps inside).

Cristo Redentor (Eng: Christ the Redeemer) is a statue of Jesus of Nazareth in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; considered the largest Art Deco statue in the world and the 5th largest statue of Jesus in the world. It is 39.6 metres (130 ft) tall, including its 9.5 metres (31 ft) pedestal, and 30 metres (98 ft) wide. It weighs 635 tonnes (625 long,700 short tons), and is located at the peak of the 700-metre (2,300 ft) Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park overlooking the city. The iconic statue is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone, and was constructed between 1922 and 1931. [source]

THE EARTH GODDESS

Currently on display from now through 31 October 2014 is the Imaginary Worlds: A New Kingdom of Plant Giants exhibit at the Atlanta Botanical Garden.

The exhibit features 28 giant topiary-like sculptures ranging up to 25 ft tall (7.62 m) and 20 ft wide (6 m) and contain nearly 200,000 plants. The largest, the 25-foot-tall Earth Goddess (seen above), is stuffed with 40,000 annuals and has become a permanent living sculpture in the Garden’s collection.

The exhibition of mosaiculture – the horticultural art of creating giant topiary-like sculptures using thousands of annual bedding plants to carpet steel armature forms – is the creative genius of International Mosaiculture of Montreal. The nonprofit group has staged wildly successful exhibitions of its work around the world, and the Atlanta showing will be the first (and largest) major exhibition of its kind in the U.S.

STROKKUR GEYSER

ON THE VERGE OF ERUPTION

In this perfectly timed photo we see Strokkur, a famous geyser in Iceland, on the verge of eruption. Located in the geothermal area beside the Hvítá River (in the southwest part of the country, east of Reykjavík), Strokkur erupts about every 4–8 minutes and can reach heights of 15–20 meters (50-65 ft), and sometimes even up to heights of 40 m (131 ft).

The frequency of eruptions coupled with a surrounding area of mud pools, fumaroles, algal deposits and other geysers makes the site a very popular tourist attraction.

A geyser is a spring characterized by intermittent discharge of water ejected turbulently and accompanied by a vapour phase (steam). The formation of geysers is due to particular hydrogeological conditions, which exist in only a few places on Earth. Generally all geyser field sites are located near active volcanic areas, and the geyser effect is due to the proximity of magma.

The water and vapour seen building up under the surface about to erupt is a good example of surface tension.

COSMIC FAIRY LIGHTS

Photograph by ESA/NASA

[Cosmic Fairy Lights] This shimmering jumble is Messier 5– a globular cluster consisting of hundreds of countless stars bound together by their collective gravity. However Messier 5 is no typical globular cluster. At 13 billion years old it dates back to near the beginning of the Universe, which is some 13.8 billion years of age. It is likewise one of the most significant clusters known, and at only 24,500 light-years away, it is not surprising that that Messier 5 is a popular website for astronomers to train their telescopes on.

Messier 5 likewise provides a puzzle. Stars in globular clusters grow old and wise together. So Messier 5 should, by now, include old, low-mass red giants and other old stars. However it is really brimming with young blue stars referred to as blue laggers. These stars spring to life when stars collide, or rip product from one another. [source]
